TÌM

Mairearad Green

The ATS gallery will open its doors again on the 28th March, presenting new paintings and sound works by renowned Ullapool based musician and painter Mairearad Green. The exhibition is titled ‘Tìm’ (pronounced ‘Cheem’, Gaelic for time.) This sensory exhibition is not to be missed and Mairearad hopes visitors will feel a sense of slowing down, to look, listen and experience, “When I think of time I think of a sense of history, of aging, of rusting, ruins, weathered objects, of place, of rocks, of maps, of time passing, of weather, of the people I most want to spend it with, of the things that matter the most.” Mairearad Green, ‘TÌM’.

Mairearad Green grew up in Achiltibuie and is now based in Ullapool. Green's expressive paintings explore the landscape around her, with a focus on time, geology, weather, and rust. “Rusted buoys, anchors and boats are objects that have witnessed time gone by, providing a link from the past to the present.” Green’s own ancestral history has also informed her current work, most notably her Great, Great Grandmother, Anna Bhàn, who was named as being involved in one of the few successful Highland Clearance stories of a resistance, led by women.

“My work is a visceral response to each moment in time, turning up every day, enjoying the process of creative interpretation, the stillness versus the movement, appreciating the small, the slow changes in landscape tones, and the ever-shifting skylines.”

Mairearad will be giving a talk about her exhibition on Thursday 2nd April. Go to ‘What’s On’ for more details.

George Macpherson RSA

(1935 - 2018)

Running concurrently with Mairearad Green’s exhibition ‘TÌM’ and in celebration of the Royal Scottish Academy’s 200th year, we are delighted to host a selection of works by renowned Scottish artist George Macpherson RSA.

RSA200: Celebrating Together marks 200 years of the Royal Scottish Academy and its members. Celebrating Together is bringing communities across Scotland and beyond together, uniting museums, galleries and cultural partners in a shared celebration. Expect major exhibitions, performances, talks and rehangs of collections that will shine a spotlight on Scotland’s most treasured artworks.

Born in Invershin and educated at Golspie High School, George Macpherson RSA attended Edinburgh College of Art, graduating in 1958 and winning the RSA Stuart Prize the same year. He travelled to Spain for the Andrew Grant Travelling Scholarship in 1959, and in 1960 he returned to Edinburgh to take up the position of Lecturer in Drawing and Painting at Edinburgh College of Art, a position he held until his retirement in 1990.

Macpherson's painting took great inspiration from his childhood in the Highlands, living close by the River Shin. He also sought influence from a continued involvement with nature and from his love of music. Macpherson was an esteemed accordionist, and his abstract work gave a visual representation of the interplay of Gaelic song and traditional Scottish music.

George Macpherson was elected to the Society of Scottish Artists in 1966 and as Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1987, being made a full Academician in 2005.
