13th May - 18th June 2017
The culmination of artist Julia Barton's Littoral Art Project with communities in Wester Ross and Shetland.
Littoral: the zone between the limits of high and low tides
Julia's investigation into plastic pollution on our shorelines began in the Wester Ross area back in 2013, carrying out a series of residencies both at An Talla Solais and on Isle Martin. Over the past four years she has recorded information collected from tens of beaches, involved over a hundred people, including five local schools. She has held open studio and workshop sessions, facilitated experential events towing lines of litter from Isle Martin, carried out Marine Conservation Society surveys and beach cleans. She is now working along the coast collecting the remaining sand samples for one of her exhibition installations, which she invites people to examine with her throughout the course of the exhibition.
Julia hopes her work will encourage people to take a new look at the scale, nature and consequences of this environmental issue and invites ideas and discussions as to what we can do collectively to tackle it.
