I have painted and drawn all my life. Much of my work is landscape based.
There are 3 key landscape areas for me; the North West coast of Scotland; the Derbyshire Dales and the Sussex weald. After working for a while on large non-figurative pieces I have come back to working more from the landscape.
I paint every year around Achiltibuie and have often been informed by the light, form and dynamics of this landscape in non figurative work as well as the land and seascapes. This dramatic landscape has multi-layered meanings for me and has done ever since I first went to work in the Summer Isles Hotel Achiltibuie in 1972. I returned for working summers as a student and have gone back for many years since then to paint and refresh the mental pictures that I have carried with me for over 35 years.
Much of the time I work directly from nature in watercolour and other media because that's the only way I can really retain a strong sense of the atmosphere and essence of a place.
In the studio I work in oils, acrylic, collage or mixed media. I have produced many large textured paintings using materials from the landscape combined with gesso, pva and acrylic paint and painting. These paintings are not a direct representation of a scene on any given day as they have to be layered up and dried out over several sessions.
Painting is a form of escape and contemplation for me. I simply want to bring a bit of what's outside indoors and record places and spaces that are part of my emotional landscape.
I also work on figure drawing and painting and some commissioned portraits.
I have exhibited paintings in Sheffield, Derbyshire (Matlock, Bakewell, Wirksworth, Hathersage) and Ullapool
More recently I have exhibited photographs of landscape, wild life and studies of cattle.
I welcome commissions in any medium.
